遂に激レアな1stカセットがCD化!!フルカラーの8ページ・ブックレットが付属!!お馴染みLAFMSの主要作家として現在も活動を続けているRick PottsとJoseph Hammer。既にLAFMSの一員として奇抜な音楽活動を展開していたRick Potts、テープ・ループの制作や録音を行っていたJoseph Hammer、1982年のハロウィーン・パーティーで出会った後、新たな共同ユニットとして誕生したのがこのDinosaurs With Horns。オリジナルは1983年にThe Solid Eyeから発表された1stカセットが初再発~CD化。テープループ&オプティガン(玩具メーカーが製造した1970年代の原始的なサンプラー)によるファウンドサウンドの集積リズム/コラージュが兎に角カッコイイ、説明不要の超傑作。ブックレットにはRick Pottsのアートワーク、セッション時の写真を掲載。
Rick Potts and Joseph Hammer met at a Halloween party in 1982. At the time, Joseph was making tape loops and recording with Points of Friction, while Rick already had many years of freakdom service under his belt with the LAFMS. They began collaborating on new recordings, with Joseph providing loops and Rick playing an Optigan borrowed from Joseph. The Optigan, made by a toy manufacturer for home use, is a primitive 1970s sampler that plays prerecorded discs ranging from exotica, pipe organ and circus band to country, folk and cheesy rock combo. The resulting prepackaged loops have a wholesome lo-fi easy listening vibe, but can be manipulated by misuse, transforming them into something far stranger.
Throughout most of 1983, the pair recorded regularly in Rick’s cramped living room using a reel-to-reel four track tape deck. Joseph developed a stereo tape-delay ping-pong feedback effect he dubbed "Hammer-Imaging", while Rick played keyboard parts to the Optigan's vintage beats. Joseph also created some dreamy electronic solo pieces using Casios and toy synthesizers, and recorded tape loops on a custom inverted machine, over which Rick added musical saw and other instruments. Visiting friends sat in sometimes. Instead of song lyrics, they chose to use found sounds from thrift store cassettes and LPs that fit the music. The recordings were assembled on cassette in the winter of 1983, initially to give to friends over the holidays. Soon after, they received an official release via Fredrik Nilsen's newly founded The Solid Eye Records and Tapes label.
The music has a woozy magic that combines musical qualities with discombobulated weirdness. Spontaneous synchronicities emerge as plunderphonic vinyl meets loops and Optigan rhythms. Dinosaurs with Horns crawled out of this surreal swamp, galumphing into the hazy LA smog, and have been bombastically wandering since 1984.

Idylla is the third of part of a trilogy of nature-based recordings that Polish composer Michał Jacaszek has recorded for Touch. The first, Catalogue des Arbres (Touch TO:94), was a collaboration with Kwartludium that celebrated the earlier inspiration of French composer Olivier Messiaen’s Catalogue des Oiseaux (1958). Gardenia (Touch TO:117) was a response to a field recording workshop organised by Francisco Lopez in Limpopo province in South Africa, on the border with Botswana, the participants living in a subtropical nature reserve in the middle of nowhere.
Idylla takes Jacaszek’s unique approach to field recording a step further. Faced with the spectre of AI and the progressive blur between digital simulation and the natural world, Jacaszek has made a series of source recordings and then used MIDI technology to isolate key sounds before scoring them for classical instruments and the vocal treatments performed by the 441Hz Choir from Gdańsk, under the direction of Anna Borkowicz.
It is said that there is nothing new under the sun. Here is a collection of recordings that are poised between a lamentation for a disappearing world and a joyous reflection upon the beauty of being sat by a river, listening to birdsong amidst the movement of trees in a soft wind. The act of conjuring remarkable sound from found objects is at the
very heart of this recording from American musicians Greg Davis and
Jeph Jerman. Having met in Arizona some years back, Davis and
Jerman commenced working together on a series of recording
projects.
Improvising with a range of implements and devices ranging from
sticks, stones and low-fi electronics to prepared instruments, gongs
and broken percussion, the pair sought to develop a personal
language that reflected their individual approaches but also created
a shared sensibility and aesthetic quality. Placing their work in a range
of environments, most of which orbit around Jerman’s ranch in
Cottonwood, Davis and Jerman create a richly textured array of
sounds from the most modest of sonic tools.
Each of the works featured here collects together multiple improvised
sessions, which have been edited to create a flowing sense of
movement and space. These tempered post-concréte works resolve a
joint interest from these two musicians in the act of freeform found

After first meeting at a concert of mine in Seattle, I was asked if I'd like to work on some recordings of Faith that would be sent to me as dubplates. I liked them a lot and started to work on them but without much success, I couldn't at that time come up with anything that I thought added to Faith's pieces. Last year in covid lockdown Faith asked again if I felt like reworking again her dubplate recordings. Second time around I really enjoyed reshaping and finding a place in them. It then took about one month to complete the tracks to my own satisfaction and sent them to Faith (hoping that she would also like them!)

Philip and I met in Seattle WA at the Touch Conference in 2016. It was the first time I had seen him perform live, the experience was beautiful, full of emotion and magic, I knew I had to become friends with him! I kept in contact with Philip, and asked if he wanted to collaborate on a music project with me, to which he agreed. I recorded my tracks when my son was a newborn during his nap times. It was an interesting process to think about someone else's creative practice beforehand, knowing that I would be making sounds for him to use and change. Part of this process was preparing dubplates to be sent to Philip, which was a first for me. Philip worked on the music for a while and then took a break, while I continued with my other music. Ak Musick、Cologne Curiositiesを復刻したMental Experienceによるコチラも偉業！！イギリスのエセックスにあるサウスエンド＝オン＝シーにて始まったフリー系を辿るアヴァンロックバンドRED SQUARE。解散する78年までカセットを2本しか残さず(両作ともウルトラレア級の物件)消滅してしまったバンド。今回突如発表されたのはその解散当時に記録された未発表スタジオセッションと、76年のカセット[Circuitry]という、とんでもなく貴重な2作を纏めた編集版。崩壊寸前の部分をギリギリでキープし続ける最高にクールな一枚。
Ultra-rare recordings by 70s UK avant-rockers Red Square, the missing link between original free-noise practitioners like AMM, Nihilist Spasm Band and Peter Brotzmann and post-No Wavers ala the Blue Humans, Borbetomagus, Fushitsusha, and the Dead C.
Named after the early Soviets Constructivists, Red Square is a pioneering free-improvising, avant-rock band. They bridged the worlds of psychedelic rock, noise and avant-jazz, and many of the techniques and approaches to music that they helped to pioneer have become common practice today. Pre-dating Sonic Youth by seven years, Last Exit by a decade and Matt Gustafsson’s The Thing by twenty five, their railing aural assaults were once considered too extreme for commercial release.
Formed in Southend-On-Sea in 1974 by guitar player Ian Staples (fresh from gigging at the Middle Earth club with Ginger Johnson’s African Drummers, sharing stage with Pink Floyd and Marc Bolan among others), bass clarinet / sax player Jon Seagroatt and free-jazz drummer Roger Telford, their unusual sound was an amalgam of jazz, improv and avant-rock, fuelled by the loud electric guitar of Ian Staples, whose style has been described as a “revolutionary blend of Hendrix and Beefheart, with the sonic palettes of Derek Bailey and Stockhausen”. Ian’s atonal guitar riffs referenced metal without ever becoming metal.
Red Square shared stages with Henry Cow, Lox Coxhill, David Toop and National Health and they were also involved with Music For Socialism. But their extreme sound and attitude were too much for both audience and record companies. The band imploded in 1978 with only two ultra-rare private cassettes releases as their only legacy. Purge.xxx continues its quiet, singular excavation of the work of Japanese composer Takashi Inagaki with Soundtracks for Toshio Matsumoto - five soundtracks gathered for the first time, newly transferred from the original tapes, mixed and mastered, and accompanied by an original essay by Jennifer Lucy Allan.
Toshio Matsumoto (1932-2017) was a foundational figure in Japanese experimental cinema - a film director, video artist, and theoretician best known internationally for his debut feature Funeral Parade of Roses, the audacious Oedipus Rex-derived narrative that mapped the Tokyo underground through a transvestite protagonist and left a long shadow over everything that followed. For Matsumoto, experimental filmmaking was a means of accessing what he described as the pre-logical unconscious. In the 1980s, he developed a new approach to the medium specifically directed at what he called disturbing perceptual unity. It is the soundtracks for these films that form the spine of this release.
Inagaki's entrance into Matsumoto's world came through his existing relationship with filmmaker Takashi Ito - a connection purge.xxx has documented across two essential prior releases, Music for the Films of Takashi Ito (2019) and Prisoner of Love: The Dead Dance (2024). Where those records mapped a long-running creative partnership rooted in the compact, unnerving registers of short experimental film, Soundtracks for Toshio Matsumoto finds Inagaki working against a different set of demands - the more expansive, philosophically burdened cinema of a director whose entire practice was bent toward a questioning of perception itself. Jean Dubuffet used to define his music as something disordered and dirty. But here, it is a Dubuffet returning from a long journey in Africa, with haunting rhythms that reach trance-like states, corrupted by ErikM's UK Drill.
With one exception, this disc is a recording of a concert given at the Ateliers Claus in Brussels in March 2024. It was preceded by three short hours of improvisation the day before and the day before that, during which ErikM and I made a series of careful observations of each other's playing. It must be said that neither of us had skimped on transporting a few cases, the contents of which would have allowed us to play several concerts in a row without ever repeating ourselves. Erik had brought his turntables to Brussels, as well as sophisticated electronic machines, accompanied by a virtually infinite sound bank. For my part, I had both a mechanical orchestra and a range of acoustic instruments at my disposal. In two sessions, we eliminated the superfluous and the
ineffective. On the evening of the concert, it was through close observation-of each sound, each direction taken by one or the other, each intention, each break-that we composed this record in the moment: vigilant and scrutinising, like the pairs of eyes on the cover of this album.

Mieko Shiomi is known both for her avant-garde musical activities with the Group Ongaku collective during her student years and for her participation in Fluxus from 1964 onwards. The Fluxus Festival held in Venice in 1990, to which she was invited, became a pivotal event that brought about a major shift in her subsequent work. That same year, she self-released a cassette requiem in memory of Fluxus founder George Maciunas.
This tape work combines original compositions performed on synthesizer harpsichord and organ with recordings of her own voice played backwards. These sound sources were taken to a studio and edited together with environmental sounds recorded at the Venice venue. The piece also incorporates the voices of key Fluxus artists including La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, Eric Andersen, Willem de Ridder, and Ken Friedman. Making use of the specific properties of tape, the piece integrates unique ideas and structures and occupies a distinctive place among Shiomi’s oeuvre.
This reissue includes an A4-sized, eight-page booklet (in Japanese and English) including a newly written commentary by Shiomi, along with photographs taken in Venice at the time and reproductions of the score.

Pseudocode features Xavier Ess (Thrills) Guy-Marc Hinant, Alain Neffe (Insane Music, BeNne GeSSeRit, Human Flesh, Subject, I Scream... ).
While Xavier S. contributes most of the lyrics and vocals, and it is Guy-Marc Hinant who often plays the core melody on his Pianet electric piano, Neffe's contributions are particularly noteworthy throughout, as he weaves together the bulk of the sonic cloth through overdubbing and mixing. One of his parts are remotely virtuosic (hence his self-identification as a non-musician), but they are always unexpected and perfect in and of themselves, emotionally and sonically, and in that sense they are deeply musical. Privately pressed on his Sandy Springs-based Horizons label in 1974, this is the sole release of Georgian home-studio Electronic Music maestro Tom Behrens. Hiding behind a glorious op-art sleeve, the music contained here is an inspired blend of noisy, free-synth filigree & the kind of anthemic, rising chord shapes more attuned to something like doom metal than the tried & true "Berlin School" methods which are often the launching-off point.
Aesthetically similar to Lorq Damon's "Journey to the Land of Forgotten Dreams" or even Cellutron & The Invisible's "Reflecting On The First Watch, We Uncover Treasure Buried For The Blind", the record's aesthetic framework of largely Electronic Music gives way in spots to a spaced-out Psychedelic sensibility, with some fine echoplex'd harp, flute, and dulcimer stylings dotting the proceedings.

Collected together for the first time on this CD are a selection of vintage amateur field recordings from two East Midlands tape clubs: The Derby Tape Recording Club and The Leicester Tape Recording Club. These are not pristine archival recordings, they bear many traces of their age and origin: tape hiss and distortion, harsh pause button edits, wow and flutter. Accepting these extraneous audio artefacts as inherent to the medium of tape, no attempts have been made to clean or restore them.
The little known phenomenon of tape recording clubs reached its peak in the 60s and 70s, as tape recording technology became more attainable to the hobbyist. Many of these recordings were made in the days when recording outdoors entailed lugging a heavy and cumbersome open-reel recorder out and about on location. This could prove impractical for the individual so being part of a club, with the associated benefits of pooled resources and shared knowledge, made things a little easier. The appearance of affordable portable battery recorders in the early 60’s granted tape enthusiasts unprecedented freedom as to what and where they could record, a freedom which most tape club members exploited to the full. Some of these recordings were made on organised outings as part of the tape club’s programme of activities, others were made independently by individual members. The Aeolian Harp (also called Wind Harp) is a string instrument that is played by natural wind. It sounds like layered feedback or drones with rich harmonic textures that will change continuously according to the wind direction, strength and consistency. One day, I bought the materials at the local DIY store and built a small Aeolian Harp. I brought the harp outside on windy days, but it made no sound at all. Through trial and error, by altering the string materials, tension, and the angle against the wind, it finally produced a sound.
The harp resonates with the surrounding environment, changing from place to place. I put two lavalier microphones into each of its two holes to clearly record the tiny resonant sounds, without too much wind interference. What is intriguing to me is that the recording will inevitably include environmental sounds from near and far which are condensed and slightly modulated by the harp. In a way, I use the harp as a kind of transducer as well as sounding body to interact with the environment through the forces of the wind. This 2CD is essentially a retrospective of Eastley's installation work. As such, it updates and adds many new examples to the 1975 release 'New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments', which was released as a split LP with David Toop on Brian Eno's Obscure Records. This is Eastley's first solo CD. Of the 35 tracks, only the last 2 have any guests or 'playing' (the most virtuosic moment being George Lewis playing a grass blade). All the other pieces are either powered by the natural forces of wind and water, or else are motor driven gallery installations. The etherial sounds of the aoelian harps, the haunting aeolian flutes, and the violent tension of his aerophone installations are hallmark Eastley sounds. These sounds, and many others, sit amidst a wide range of acoustic settings, from windy hill tops to quiet brooks, residential street scenes to coastal shores. The indoor recordings are no less varied, ranging across a rich variety of acoustics and gallery spaces from tiny micro sounds to large scale amplification. Wood, metal and stone are brought to life with electricity. Although there are many photos in the 20 pages booklet, much is left to the imagination to work out how the sounds are made. With this limited access to the visual, the focus is pulled towards the musicality of the sounds themselves. This musicality is reinforced by the slow crossfades of most of the pieces from indoors to outdoors to form a series of suites. The recordings mostly date from the mid 70s, but there are pieces from later decades. Nearly everything was recorded either to Revox or Uher and occasionally cassette, using what microphones were available at the time. Recent recordings are digital. From the 1950s, Masaaki Takano (1927-2007) worked as a freelance "sound planner," mainly creating sound effects for stage productions. In the mid-1980s he began performances called "Sound Play" where he would perform on his own self-created sound instruments and his collection of ethnic instruments. Growing out of his work with sound effects, he became obsessed with the recording of natural sounds from the 1970s onwards, and this album "Shizukutachi" is a record of a high-quality recording of water droplets that he created in the studio using his own self-created suikinchiku system. This reissue recreates the original LP, using special paper to create beautiful packaging and duplicating the original, ultra-transparent vinyl. The reissue includes newly penned, detailed liner notes by Tomotaro Kaneko (owner of the Japanese Art Sound Archive).

The LP jacket is made from two layers of chipboard cardboard and washi-like "shindanshi" paper that reproduces the feel of the original. The LP also comes with two postcards and a 20-page A4 booklet (Text in Japanese and English),a download code.

Considered one of the most influential contemporary artists, Dieter Roth was consistent in his artistic search for inner self through and produced artworks in the various media, from graphics, drawings, and sculptures, to assemblages / ready-made, sound and music recordings.
Dieter Roth's Verlag was founded in 1974 under the name Dieter Roth's Familienverlag and renamed in 1978. The label gradually acquired something of a cult status the 1970s, and Colette Roper’s “Piano Pieces”, which was released in 1979, was one of the hardest to find album among Dieter Roth's Verlag catalogues. Much is unknown about Colette Roper and “Piano Pieces” was her only album.
The front sleeve features a hand-drawn butterfly on yellow background, the rear sleeve features a photograph of women with a bunch of flowers in their hands and poems. And the work engraved on the vinyl is rough-hewn piano minimalism with a lot of hiss and fragile innocence.
As with Dieter Roth's artworks, there is underlying feel of decay and metamorphosis. Primitive innocence and enigmatic elements featured in this obscure album will provoke various speculations about many other elements hidden inside.

His work with both text and sound has been influenced by the Middle Eastern mystical system best known as Kabbalah, as well as - but not limited to - African, Afro-Caribbean and Indonesian rhythms, musics and cultures. He has studied Ewe music, Balinese gamelan, and Indian tala. From 1959-65 he studied drumming with Arnie Frank, then Chuck Flores and then Art Anton at Drum City in Van Nuys CA. In 1963 he abandoned Judaism and began his life-long relationship with World religions and esoteric systems. 1964 saw the beginning of his initial attempts at writing Poetry and explorations of both Two and Three dimensional Artforms. After studying at CalArts from 1969-70 with poets Emmett Williams and Michael S. Bell and writer/critic Sue-Ellen Case, he began producing works using the name S. Weisser, primarily concentrating on visual and sound poetries. In 1975, he was included in the 'Second Generation' show at the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco. In 1976 he moved from Los Angeles to the Bay Area, ending up with a storefront studio on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, pretty much midway between the headquarters of the Black Panther Party, (who dissolved that year), and the Hells Angels (still extant). A primary reason for this move was his association with the San Francisco Alternative exhibition space La Mamelle (run by Carl Loeffler and Nancy Evans. In 1977 he presented his first solo percussion performance under the project title 'Sound of Wind and Limb'. In 1978 he began developing an idiosyncratic performance technique utilizing self-developed instruments formed from industrial materials such as stainless steel, titanium, and PVC plastics.
Critic John Buckley described his performances in this era: the instruments are collections of objects ... strung together with ropes and swung at varying speeds and directions to produce a fairly astonishing range of pitches and timbres. And the moves the guy goes through to manipulate these instruments are, for grace and athleticism, strong stuff. Z'EV is also interesting for the close correlation of visual and musical aspects, since the physical vibrations of the objects you see are the same as those picked up by the ears as sound. Also, since the rhythms of the work are dictated by the performer's every and any movement, an inevitable integrity unifies the act.

後期Coilの重要作!!未体験の方は是非!!1990年代後半、MTV時代のミュージックビデオ監督として成功を収めたピーター・クリストファーソンはジョン・バランスと共にロンドンから田舎町ウェストン・スーパー・メアへと移住。その後サイポールサンドラを含む新メンバーが次々と加入し音楽制作の環境が加速、Coilのディスコグラフィーはほぼ倍増という状況へと変貌する。本作[Black Antlers]は2004年の「Even an Evil Fatigue」ツアーに合わせて作られた後期Coilの最も純粋な姿を体現した一枚であり、無駄を削ぎ落としタイトに、そしてよりビートを強調しリズミカルに仕上げられた説明不要の名作。
In the late-1990s, after a successful career as an MTV-era music video director, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson moved with Jhonn Balance - his partner in life and in Coil - from London to the rural Weston-super-Mare, creating an environment for all things "musick, musick, musick!" with a revolving door of new members, including Thighpaulsandra. This eruption in activity saw Coil's discography nearly double, and during this fruitful period, Thighpaulsandra asked the simple question: why doesn't Coil play live? After a 16-year wait, thanks to the rapid technological advancement in the form of MacBooks, DAWs, VSTs and plugins, Coil were able bring their music to the stage as always envisioned. In live performance, they could embrace the risks and freedoms of real time sonic manipulation, as noted by Sleazy: "Reshape the show minute by minute... the direction is very spontaneous, not so much in the way of like jazz improvisation but in a kind stream of consciousness… Thighpaulsandra brought us his wisdom, and he was able to convince us we could do it."
From 1999 to 2003, Coil was "like a snake shedding its skin," transforming every six months into something "completely different." Their evolution was documented in real time through the recent advent of lower-cost CD-R manufacture, on limited edition albums including 'Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil' and 'Queens of the Circulating Library.' In preparing for 2004’s "Even an Evil Fatigue" live series, Coil began work on their next period-defining masterpiece, 'Black Antlers.'
'Black Antlers' showcases late-period Coil at their purest: stripped down, tighter, and leaner. The music became more rhythmic, with a greater emphasis on beats: "the songs we did tend to be more... not rock in any sense of a word, but you know, more conventional in terms of structure, but now what we're doing is sort of within an 'electronic' genre." The sound of 'Black Antlers' is of an intoxicating energy, combining Thighpaulsandra's advanced synthesis, Balance's poetic lyricism and Christopherson's flirtations with jazz and Ableton-aided PowerBook maximalism. Rounding out the trio were renowned hurdy-gurdy player Cliff Stapleton on a "specifically commissioned" electric variant, to merge into the band’s "strange and other-worldly music"; Royal Academy of Music trained percussionist Tom Edwards (who also appeared with Thighpaulsandra in Spiritualized’s live band); and European and Near East winds specialist Mike York on pipes, bombarde, duduk and balalaika. Initially released as an "album-in-progress" in June 2004, a post on the Threshold House website noted, "Please remember that September will see Coil recording the album "Black Antlers (Proper)"." Jhonn Balance passed away that November; Christopherson would reunite with 'Love's Secret Domain' collaborator Danny Hyde to complete 'Black Antlers' by May 2006.
Revitalized energy marked 'Black Antlers''s recording, paired with the group's signature wordplay and humor (the name came from a series of imagined adult film titles). At their "Evil Fatigue" tour opener in Paris, Jhonn Balance presented the revised "Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)" as, "an updated version of one of our older-never 'hits.'" The song, about the energy generated by "two teenagers, or old age pensioners" rapidly pulses, with Edwards's marimbas electronically modified and arpeggiated by Christopherson. Album opener "The Gimp (Sometimes)" is hypnotic and hallucinatory, recalling Coil's 90s period, with a potentially uneasy air, filled with repetition, distorted vocals, and Thighpaulsandra's modulated drone. "Sex With Sun Ra (Part One - Saturnalia)" reveals the potentials of the 2004 lineup, as it writhes and glides through an imagined conversation with the legendary composer, building into overdrive. On the complementary piece, Christopherson & Hyde's "Sex With Sun Ra (Part Two - Sigillaricia)", the song evolves into a throbbing ouroboros of glitches and free flowing energy, with York's pipe samples reverberating almost filmically. One highlight is "The Wraiths And Strays Of Paris", an expansion of the song's first release (as "Wraiths And Strays (From Montreal)", available as a downloadable bonus track). "Of Paris" takes Thighpaulsandra synthesized warmth and Christopherson's PowerBook manipulations & stylizations from the original, adding samples taken from multi-track recordings of the full live band - including Balance's vocals from the Paris show - fully realizing Christopherson's desire of "taking the (electronic) genre to a place that people would find unexpected, and more challenging." Adding to the unexpected, and building upon their own uncompromising legacy, Coil delicately cover the traditional African American lullaby (and "friend's song") "All The Pretty Little Horses", with Balance's vocals soothing the listener in an almost hushed whisper.
For Christopherson, following Jhonn's death, the relevance and power of Coil's creative output changed. He had one goal in mind: "to maintain the availability of the archive for future generations." In original form, 'Black Antlers' represented the possibilities of a new era for the group, built from the momentum of live performance, new sounds and ideas. For the final version, 'Black Antlers' reunited Coil members from over the decades, collaborating across the boundaries of fixed time. There would be no more new Coil, only the completion of unfinished projects, bringing them to a standard which Balance would "have loved and approved of."

A new face from the furthest North-East of Italy, Trieste: the city of the "bora", a powerful and relentless wind that for many of its inhabitants represents a state of mind, more than a simple typical atmospheric event. Petroglifi Solubili is the project by Loris Zecchin (Solar Ipse fanzine), born in 2021 with a simple sampler (the legendary Roland SP-404) and gradually expanded with an equipment that includes a number of synths, guitar effect pedals, and contact microphones.
"Segnale unico di avvio" is the sixth release after five CD-Rs, always privately edited and available only in physical format. The first source of inspiration was the Merzbow pre-laptop era and the furious and darting cut-ups of Killer Bug. Cascades of loops, sudden bursts of noise to eat the sound spectrum with its tongues of fire and more meditative decompression interludes. Seven tracks composed in almost full social retreat in his own home, obtained by arranging the equipment on the kitchen table and always favoring an approach to composition as intuitive and primordial as possible. Inseparable from the sound part is the "skin" of the album, the artwork, composed of the collages made in the same period as the compositions.

Preface:
"Mokushi" is the Japanese translation of "apocalypse", and all the dictionaries give to it the meaning of "great catastrophe, total disaster, weighty calamity". Simply this is a common place, a cliché which we must demolish. In reality the root of the word "apocalypse" comes from the greek "apokàlypsis", which means "discovery, revealment", and on it we don't find simply a fatalistic message of world's destruction, but a discovery, a revealment of divine truths, the plain truths. It's true that Apocalypse 16,16 ("Mokushi XVI, XVI") is mentioning Armageddon, but will be something very different from a total annihilation of every shape of life on earth. On the contrary, we've the happy assurance that only the wickeds, the arrogants, the oppressors, the unthankfuls, the disloyals, the selfish persons, the God's opposers will be totally destroyed by the angelic armies. 'stilla sväva' presents Swedish pianists Mats Persson and Kristine Scholz performing two intimate and personal pieces by the Swedish kacapi musician and composer Kristofer Svensson composed for early 19th century instruments tuned in just intonation.
'I Sommarluft', performed by Persson on a Swedish Lindholm-Söderström clavichord from 1809, is described by Svensson as a musical self-portrait in six movements. With direct quotations and variations, the composer reflects on their musical training and brings into a unified poetic vision different musical traditions such as Japanese mi-kagura, European Renaissance music, Sundanese tarawangsa, and the music of Svensson’s teacher Fujieda Mamoru.
On 'Kori Kamandungan', performed on a square piano built by Pehr Rosenwall in the 1840s, Scholz plays an elaborate part of twenty different harmonics—something that is made possible by the horizontal layout of the strings—while Persson leisurely moves through simple chordal and melodic phrases in a justly tuned 5-limit pitch space. April 2023; finally returning to the CP 23X "Romanian Electroinc Music" series after a considerable lapse, here is a collection of Modern Compositions & Tape Music by Romanian composer Lucian Mețianu centerpieced by the side-length piece "Pythagoreis, Muzică Electronică" (composed in 1970 on the Moog Modular setup at Hochschule für Music in Köln, guided & largely executed by the invisible touch of engineers Albert & Genia Hoppenrath) with the bonus addition of a seemingly-entirely-unrelated, yet similarly Hoppenrath-guided piece: Silvio Foretić & Janko Jezovšek's side of the 1974 "Sang Und Klang / Balkanal" LP (sparing you Franz Bücheler's side of, largely, bog-standard lieder).
Similar to Jaap Vink & Bohdan Mazurek's presences at the Instituut Voor Sonologie & Polish Radio Experimental Studios, respectively, the Hoppenraths collectively enabled (and, often, entirely executed) pieces by Klarenz Barlow, Foretic, and others yielding some of the finest & most transgressive work from the era. "Pythagoreis" alone lurches from grinding, Bertoia-esque metallic klang to the sort(s) of ghost resonances of Xenakis' "Bohor" over a spry 16 minutes, and the exceedingly fried Sound Poetry tape-chops & audio-rate gatings of "Balkanal" rival anything from the Chopin/Dufrêne/Heidsieck catalogues going from strength to strength across the piece's eye-watering 32 minutes.

The lone 1980 release by this German scholar (he taught at Ostendorfer Gymnasium where he created student-musicals with FX Müller and “dealt intensively with electronic and computer-based music production;” he’s now the head of the “Neumarkt musical and theater association”) toes the line between timbral exploration & staid Berlin-school trappings in a vaguely Christianic manner (much in the way Henry Sweitzer “Te Deum” set merged the era's hegemonic religious tendencies with transgression the year before).
There’s a cursory glance towards woollier lanes that rears its (ugly?) head in spots; honestly, this is what makes this all so special. One moment a plaintive, hand-played phrase will lull you into false soporificity, then suddenly give way to a rising swarm of detuned PWM locusts. The whole enterprise is teeming with little burbles of almost Birchall/Raicevician filigree while rising into these grand, orgiastic climaxes & there’s a certain palpable malaise throughout that hits the spot.

Psychation despite containing three lengthy tracks really needs to be listened to as a whole. Despite the tracks being individual entities with quite different atmosphere they are best appreciated as a thematic progression across the entire album. These tracks are constantly evolving and mutating pieces of angular geometry. A cascade of electronic shapes that fluctuate and shift in a metamorphosis of Musique Concrete tonal expressionism. At times the unrelenting nature of the album is just about to break your endurance before a snatch of melodic ambience breaks through the tumult and disarray.
Where Psychation differs from most 'noise' based albums is that it retains its granite density without descending into chaotic nonsensicality. Despite the at times abrasive incisive attack of sound it retains a sense of weight. Almost as if the sound is being layered as one would layer asphalt, layer after layer added and poured. Over and over again in ceaseless repetition. The sound of humanity as it is drowned beneath the post human neo liberal order. Psychation is the sound of humanity as it thrashes and drowns beneath the technologic order that it has birthed into being. In 2009 at Area10 in London, our mutual friend Kasper T. Toeplitz introduced Z’EV (1951 - 2017) with his percussion to me (Julien Ottavi) during a David Tudor’s Rainforest IV performance that I was organising at that time with the support of Apo33.
Even though we had played a couple of gigs before in London and Nantes, the real start of our collaboration was when we toured together in 2011. In 2014, Z’EV came to live in Nantes and we spent time playing music together, mainly working with Orgone Nantes Percussion on a Z’EV piece for percussion. We worked on some recordings mixed live and studio sessions that had been put together over the year after 2015. We used both percussion recordings and live music that were sometimes processed and other times not. We spent a whole year recording bits and pieces that were assembled together during a few months. The idea was to create a release that will cross the different aspects of our collaboration, together, live, recorded, in the same place, sometimes in different places. The aspects of composition were really strong as we worked on each other's materials through exchanges about the way to mix it and arrangement of the multi-track recordings. Some parts of the live materials were recorded as stereo, and the most interesting parts were cut and assembled. Even today, it is difficult to say which one is live and which one is not. Ben McElroy is a folk/experimental/ambient artist based in the UK.
He has released prolific albums since his 2016 debut "Bird Stone" for Whitelabrecs. Notable releases since then include 2018s "The Word Cricket Made Her Happy" for eilean rec. and 2022s "How I Learnt to Disengage From The pack" on The Slow Music Movement (which was folk album of the month in the Guardian). Ben also performs live around the UK (and potentially further in the future).

"This album evolved from long improvisations on pump organ and cello.
I really wanted to play the instruments as a form of therapeutic release, a kind of stimming, paying more attention to this than the Appollonian aspects of the music. So scrape and repetition… anger and using the bow/keys to really try to gnaw into deep, old brain feelings.
I often start things with improvisations, but then tidy, smooth things out… I wanted to keep that aspect to the minimum here.. there is some, but where possible I’ve kept the squeaks, the noises, the mistakes.
The project took on another dimension when I received some funding from PRS Foundation, allowing me to bring more artists (Debbie Armour on vocals, Elinor Rowlands on spoken word and Nick Jonah Davis on guitar). Where possibly, these collaborations were also improvised, in the moment and left a little raw.
The funding also allowed me to create an accompanying film "Widdershins & Deosil". As an American in Belgium, McCloud Zicmuse developed a deep love for some of the customs of his new-found homeland: a specific kind of archery (‘staande wip’), celebrating carnaval, aging geuze-beers, and not in the least: playing de ‘hommel”, the Flemish cousin of the apalachian Dulcimer. With the persona Linus Vandewolken, Zicmuse took a deep dive into these traditions. His love for the dulcimer is very real, yet he breaks out of the narrow framework in which the instrument is often handled. The additional use of homemade flutes, percussion instruments and some humming definitely add up to the experience.
Zicmuse released a handful of tapes as Linus Vandewolken, and a double 10” on okraina records. But his musical curriculum is way longer than that. Under his own name, he did releases on ao Shelter press, with le ton mite on crammed discs, and contributed to a long, long list of releases by artists as diverse as Yume Bitsu, Maher Shalal Hash Basz or Singers.
For this new opus, Linus Vandewolken provides some richly brewed compositions, with no added sugar or yeast. There is an elements of sourdough, the richness of earthy odors, the first song (Terugkeer van de Kudde) sounds like a smooth multi-tracked moment, but is actually a live multi-instrumental piece: a home-made double reed xaulos is played sparingly along the fingerpicked strings of the home-made hommel.
Like the barley in the beer, the hommel remains the main ingredient of the disc. Multiple techniques are used to unleash its voice, from tapping to bowing, to all at the same time. A compilation of travels, residencies, desires… songs have been harvested from 2019-2024 in France, Poland, Sweden, England, moments of Vandewolken’s wanderings, evoking inspirations & collaborations in unlikely spots, like a pump organ cameo of Christo Wallers in a village chapel a short distance from Hadrian’s Wall.
As borders change and move, the flute comes around to sweetly catch our attention, metal lines from a letterpress shop invade the hommel strings creating distortions & unlikely rhythms. Luigi Nono (1924 –1990) was a great innovator in the use of spatialization of sound and experimentation with performance space, non-linear time and the collapsing between sound and silence.
Beginning in 1959, he distanced himself from serial orthodoxy and the Ferienkurse compositional scene. His new works reflected a concern in political and cultural events and introduced the use of tape and electroacoustic technology.
His compositional process was increasingly involved with specific performers, whom he chose for their tone and expressive characteristics. This trust reflects on Nono’s interest in collaboration, developing the idea that traditional musical notation is limited and cannot reproduce the complexity of performance he reached with every performer.
This recording represents one of Nono’s most fruitful collaborations, the one he developed with flutist Roberto Fabbriciani during the 1980s. The track list presented here –– selected by Fabbriciani and Alvise Vidolin –– explores Nono’s music as it is defined by space (and/or the acoustic space) rather than time — the auditory impression of a labyrinthine acoustic environment in which the works seem to float on the threshold of sound and silence and seem to fluctuate from one place to another.
The creative process of A Pierre. Dell’azzurro silenzio, inquietum (1985) took place during rehearsals for the first performance of Prometeo. Tragedia dell’ascolto (Venice, 1984). Fabbriciani recalls suggesting to Nono that he should write a work, based on section VIII of Io, frammento dal Prometeo because he felt that the live electronic potential explored in that work had not been completely exploited.
The interplay between flute, clarinet and live electronics and their timbral fusion or a continuum of timbre, are at the core of the compositional process. Once the live electronic manipulation of sound moves above the threshold of silence, the listener should no longer be able to detect whether a given sound heard was produced by one of the two performers or reproduced by electronic/digital equipment.
Das Atmende Klarsein, fragmente is a reduced version of Nono’s work for small choir, bass flute soloist and live electronics. It is the first composition of the 1980s which led to Prometeo and the first outcome of the intense collaboration between Fabbriciani and Nono. In the original piece, Nono composed two distinct worlds, one of choir, the other of bass flute. As they never perform together, the bass flute part later became a solo piece after undergoing changes, cuts and transformations with the various performances by Fabbriciani (this is typical of Nono’s work in progress).
Musiche per Manzù, for magnetic tape (1969), was created for a short documentary that shows the work that Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù did to realize the bronze doors of St. Francis church in Rotterdam. Space and spatialization are only illusory in the original version of the work, which antedates Nono’s live electronics research. But space is so deliberate here that this piece is suitable to live electronics interpretations. Alvise Vidolin re-interprets Musiche per Manzù using the original mono version published by Ricordi, with a multichannel 5.1 surround sound system.
A “Omaggio a Luigi Nono” is Fabbriciani’s tribute to his collaboration and friendship with Luigi Nono. The tape part has been recorded by Fabbriciani at the Experimental Studio of the Heinrich-Strobel Stiftung in Freiburg, the same studio where he worked with Nono in his important sound research for a decade. It contains the natural acoustic sounds of the piccolo. It explores this instrument and reflects Fabbriciani’s research on extended yet simple sounds.
A “Omaggio a Luigi Nono”is also an homage to the last years of their friendship, which culminated in the piece Post-praeludium n. 3 “BAAB-ARR”. “We got as far as the Post-praeludium n. 3 “BAAB-ARR”, structured on a single note with all its possible universes. After the performance in the Kammersaal of the Berlin Philharmonie on 4th September 1988 Gigi [Luigi] smiled and said to me, “the next time I’ll write less!” (Fabbriciani, 1999). The score is so non-existent and deprived of any meaningful indications to any flutists but Fabbriciani that the Committee for the Edition of the Works of Luigi Nono set up by Casa Ricordi has decided to withdraw it from the catalogue.

The acoustic part interacts with the tape part made with prerecorded piccolo sounds. Vasco Alves is a sound artist living and working in Lisbon, Portugal. His work investigates the materialities of sound through uses of synthesis, amplification and unstable electronic systems. The results are often of a volatile nature, but also subjected to rigid live processing techniques. With his ongoing works for Gaita de Fole (Portuguese bagpipes), there is a distinct focus on the complementation and contrast between the acoustic voice of the Gaita set against computer generated sound (and other similar instruments or sound sources).
This particular type of instrument has been used for centuries, mostly in rural contexts of the northwestern Iberian peninsula (roughly between Galicia and Lisbon). After a few years learning and playing the traditional repertoire, a development of material outside of conventional context was initiated, focusing distinctly on the potential for materiality in the Gaita de Fole's sound and spatial impact; The use of multiphonics and other 'unwanted' sounds caused by subtle disruptions of the airflow within the chanter can be highly textural or grainy by itself, but also set against electronic generated audio to create intermodulations, masking and colour shifting.

Louie Rice and Luciano Maggiore work together as NO PA ON, performing score based works - both acoustic (without a PA system) and amplified (with a PA system). The duo was originally conceived to perform works by other artists as part of an event series at Cafe OTO in London. This series acted as a research period that went on to inform the action-based pieces that Rice and Maggiore are now writing themselves. These pieces explore physical actions and vocalisations in response to pre defined prompts or rules, and could best be described as 'two people, in a room, doing something.'
Both their solo electro-acoustic practices and other collaboratiions have brought them each to appreciate auditory phasing, and expanding the spatialisation of sound beyond the stereo field. Perceptually the Mountain is a source of pleasure, alterity and danger. Acoustically transparent. Souffle (Fr: 'Breathe') is a film without images, conceived of and directed by Luca Garino - an Italian sound artist and composer, based in Turin. Souffle offers scenes of attentive and mimetic presences in dialogue with other presences. Interior and exterior environments, and the various forms of life and/or non-life that inhabit them. They are integral assets to these scenes, and make up these other presences.
When an exterior environment meets an interior environment, one may only pass via permissible openings, analogous to the mouths and branchial derivations of Pilau, the giant Piraïba fish which lives in the Amazon river basin, to which the Wayãpi of the French Guiana dedicate a traditional dance, that must be sung in the course of a single day. These openings are where information flows and interchanges from the other to the familiar; an ephemeral exchange which we can only experience through our single point of view: the human one, and only to the extent of what this perception can reveal.
An interior without openings will suffocate this vital flow; where information is held still, authoritarian thoughts will thrive, and inhabitants become occupants. Perhaps the human bodies should therefore invert and spill out their minds and insides back to the earth - surrendering to entropy, and relinquishing all false dichotomies of separation: Subject / Object, Culture / Nature, Mind / Body, Human / Animal. Kozmické louky begins with a place. The title names a wetland in Czech Silesia, pressed up against the Polish border, and one of the last two remaining floodplain areas along the Opava River, locally known as the Opavice. Once degraded, these alluvial meadows have in recent years been brought back to life through careful restoration; they are again home to dense, interlocking communities of birds, insects, plants and amphibians, even as they sit squarely inside the overlapping pressures of local and global climate crisis. For Magdaléna Manderlová, who comes from this region, Kozmické louky is not just a landscape but a sounding body - a place that breathes with the river, remembers water, and registers change in every rustle, call and shift of weather. The album that bears its name listens closely to these meadows over time, entering into a dialogue with them through field recordings and electroacoustic compositions made on site or in close relation to it between 2021 and 2025.
The record’s first seven pieces are recorded, composed and mixed by Manderlová herself, establishing a vocabulary in which microphones, synthesis and text operate as ways of thinking with the wetland rather than merely documenting it. Her practice, already evident in earlier works like Straw Bales, treats field recording as a porous medium: frog choruses, wind across sedges, distant road noise and mechanical hums are not neutral “backgrounds” but actors in a shared scene. These sounds are often left recognisable, but they are also stretched, layered, filtered or folded back on themselves, creating a blurred zone where direct environmental capture shades into dream, memory and speculation. Across these tracks, time is elastic. You can feel the seasonal cycles of Kozmické louky - thaw, flood, bloom, drought - compressed and refracted, as if the meadow were replaying years of its own listening in a compressed span.
From track eight onward, Kozmické louky opens out into a genuinely polyphonic project. Long‑time environmental sound artist Peter Cusack contributes a composed, performed, recorded and mixed piece of his own, bringing his deep experience of “sonic journalism” to bear on the floodplain. Lucie Páchová follows with a work composed, performed, recorded and mixed by her, using field recordings provided by Cusack as both anchor and point of departure. A 2023 live score by Manderlová, performed by symposium participants on site at Kozmické louky, pulls the wider community directly into the record: a document of collective, in‑situ listening and sounding where the meadow and its human visitors briefly form a single ensemble. Michal Kindernay - Manderlová’s collaborator on the broader Kozmic sounds initiative - contributes a piece he recorded, composed and mixed himself, extending the album’s viewpoint and technical approach.
The final stretch of the record deepens the sense of relational listening. One piece is recorded and composed by Manderlová featuring Věra Manderlová, mixed by Kristoffer Lislegaard; another is co‑composed by Adela Mede, Klaus Ellerhusen Holm and Manderlová, again mixed by Lislegaard. These collaborations thicken the web of perspectives, letting different musical languages and personal histories resonate through the same wetland focus. Throughout, mastering by Lasse Marhaug ensures that the album’s quietest details and densest accumulations remain vivid, preserving both the subtlety of faint environmental sounds and the full grain of amplified, processed material. The cover art and graphic design by Kateřina Havelková give visual form to this world, while liner notes by Manderlová and Kindernay, plus a poem by František Hruška, draw out the literary and reflective dimensions of the project.
Released by Gruenrekorder as part of its Field Recording Series, Kozmické louky arrives within a catalogue that has long explored the creative edges of environmental sound work. Yet it also stands as the aural counterpart to a larger, site‑specific investigation. The album was created alongside the long‑term project Kozmic sounds, developed by Manderlová and Kindernay and initiated and commissioned by Bludný kámen in 2021. That project, which has included installations, radio works and on‑site events, listens to the evolving soundscapes of the Opava and its living floodplains, attending to the wetland as both ecological system and cultural space. Perifaerye is a multi-part work of art comprising of 18 soundscapes, 36 digital drawings and 24 writings. Perifaerye is at once a record release, a book, a website; in the autumn of 2023 a series of playlists were published on billboards, linking the online soundscapes to the real-life physical realm. This publication is an artistic hybrid: a vinyl record / book combining sound, image and text.
The 18 audio works condense the sounds of the urban periphery into a sonic cartography. In Hamburg-Eidelstedt, people live in smaller detached houses and in larger apartment blocks. New housing estates have been developed recently in direct neighbourhood to the motorway, and currently in the district centre; a district where post-war housing estates and architectural remnants from a village past co-exist. Even meadows and fields, surrounded by the noise of motorways and other traffic, aeroplanes (the airport is close by) and railways (passenger and und freight trains, long distance, regional and local services). This collection of soundscapes – each a short composition on its own – presents a sonic portrait of a contemporary urban area.
In the spring 2023, Jorn Ebner recorded the urban spaces of the Hamburg district of Eidelstedt. For each audio piece there is an image. The artist’s writings reflect and accompany the creative process. For this book and record, Sebastian Kokus and Thomas Korf created a very haptic design. This debut-LP is structured like a long-form piece split up into smaller parts, constructed with manipulated field recordings, synthesis experimentations, layered harmonies and textured sound design. One gets the sense the material journeys through a narrative in disarray, depicted through numerous undisclosed, ambiguous perspectives — there are parts that are melodic, radiant and vaguely warm, like suddenly having tuned in to an imprint of some long-forgotten person’s experiences, distorted by the current of time. At other times, you are presented cold, solitary iterations of synthesis, as if you were stranded within the dormant memory of a digital archive.

Having recently contributed to Goner’s »Yogascum« LP, reissued in late 2017 as a vinyl release through Hallow Ground, Mark Godwin now returns to the label together with his musical partner Gareth Ormerod as zK. Formed in 1999 as a live project, zK first released on the legendary Mancunian Skam label in 2003, toured throughout Europe and were invited by Autechre to play the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival.
In the following years, Godwin and Ormerod produced a slew of records that at once paid tribute to their roots in the emerging British rave scene while pushing the envelope of experimental electronica. Combining their interest for visual art and psychology with their spiritual connection to bands like Coil, some of whose records Godwin has worked on as a mastering engineer, zK have carved out a niche for themselves with a multi-disciplinary approach to music.
»Last Night«, their first proper studio album in five years, was recorded in Godwin’s new home Bangkok. Drawing heavily on musique concrète techniques, synthesizers, and sampling to create an immersive experience bordering on the synaesthetic, the six tracks capture the nervous energy of Thailand’s capital after dark.
Moving from the opener »Ouside Broadcast« with its collage-like juxtaposition of every-day sounds and squelching noise to the aptly titled »Cognitive Dissonance« and the aleatoric modular excursions of »Feral Confection« towards the more sombre, lysergic undertones of the B-side, ending in the both elegiac and haunting final track »Fleshpotting«, Godwin and Ormerod explore the sharp contrasts which characterise the city.

The monumental composition for 27 musicians by Swedish saxophonist, improviser and composer Mats Gustafsson is an in-depth exploration and continuation of the previous piece Hidros o.T. (2019), commissioned by NyMusikk Trondheim, inspired by the mirrored forms and visual structures of artist Mathias Pöschl. Controlling 3 different groups of instruments (two 9-member “mirror” ensembles: Polish and Norwegian, a group of soloists and electronics), the conductor will use 3 types of graphics and different conducting methods. The composition will be performed by the conductor in the form of Instant Conducting, where tempo, dynamics, density and other musical parameters is be controlled by predetermined rules.

Brötzmann collaborated with many artists in his career, regularly adding new compatriots into the fold, and Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love became one of his staunchest allies after the percussionist joined the Chicago Tentet. They worked in various contexts, including this inexhaustible, hard-hitting duo. Most of the albums they’ve issued have captured live performances, but in 2015 they made this stunning studio recording. As Nilssen-Love says in the liner notes, “Peter had acquired a contra-alto clarinet and was very enthusiastic about the sound of this instrument. I had also bought several Korean gongs which I hadn’t used yet.” They met up for 1 two-day session in Antwerp that August, and from the outset it feels different from much of their work.
The music is less frenzied and aggressive than we’re used to, as the musicians shared their exploration of new tools with a more contemplative approach. To be sure, both Brötzmann and Nilssen-Love summon the usual energy here and there, but it’s a genuine revelation to hear them feel out new sounds in real-time, whether it’s the former caressing the rheumy nasality of the contra-alto clarinet, or the latter reveling in the sustained resonance of his new gongs. Still, even if they were trying out new tools, their rapport and level of engagement was just as strong and deep as ever. Colliding schedules prevented them from ever wrapping up the production on the album, but they began planning for it during the pandemic. Sadly, it fell to Nilssen-Love to shepherd the project at home, but it was worth the wait. This duo album represents a major statement from both musicians. Sophie Agnel plays the whole piano. Its body matters as much as its strings. The keyboard's lid is just as good closed as it is open - in fact it’s best slammed open and closed rapidly. Joined by bassist John Edwards and drummer Steve Noble, Three on a Match explodes the piano trio - each player sparking off the other so quickly that it’s impossible to figure out who lit the flame.
Recorded at OTO in 2023, this was the second two night residency for a trio that has fast become one of our favourite improvising groups. Each individually brilliant, Agnel, Edwards and Noble’s enduring connection is in their seriously playful approach to their instrument - in their way of looking at it as a whole and then tearing it apart, breaking it down into its raw materials - wood, brass, steel.
Born in Paris in the 60’s and playing her parents piano as soon as she could stand up, Agnel is classically trained and had a turn in modern jazz. What frustrated her was the strange disconnect between the frame of the piano and its keyboard - a weird boundary that seemed to form some hushed code of etiquette. “The first thing I put inside the piano was a plastic goblet. I’d seen a few pianists do it: Fred Van Hove, for example, put rubber balls inside his. But what didn’t appeal to me was that there seemed to be no link between the piano’s outside and inside.” If you see Agnel play now, the body of her piano is littered with fish tins, ping pong balls, wooden blocks - not that you’d recognize their sounds. Steve Noble surrounds his drum kit with whistles, tubes and towels alongside gleaming brass cymbals and gongs. Their stage is a heady mix of high and low - the grand piano and the gong alongside rubber balls and tiny bells; players half stood up, reaching in, bending toward - relentlessly working their instrument to unburden its sound from genre.
Free improvisation is always a leap of faith, a test of commitment, and these three players are completely unafraid. The music switches deftly from super taut, gut-first string manipulation to extremely loud percussive collisions. The trio can play microscopic mutations on a bass note and then scale up on the turn of a pin to plunge into huge, black chords and ricocheting sonority - dissolving the boundary between body and sound. The crescendo of Part Two is shaped by such cumulative repetition that it feels like a confrontation - a controlled test for breaking point. What happens if we keep going?
As so we left Part Three as the last encore of the residency. Two totally infectious sets from Decoy -- the trio of John Edwards, Steve Noble, and Alexander Hawkins -- reunited with pocket trumpet and saxophone player Joe McPhee on the closing night of his four day residency at Cafe OTO. In the eight years between the recordings which make up AC/DC and their last release Spontaneous Combustion, Decoy and each of its members have been practicing individually at the very top of their form. Coming together again in such celebratory circumstances and in the good company of a fantastic crowd set the scene for a very special night. As they begin, Alexander Hawkins casts a needling surface between his Hammond organ and John Edwards's loose splatters and slaps of low-end bass. McPhee skitters over them with his pocket trumpet by way of introduction; Steve Noble strikes his rims in anticipation. The first set sees moments of frenetic free jazz peel off into weirdo soul territory and when switched to saxophone halfway through, McPhee's romantic lyricism is utterly beautiful. When a groove sets in, Hawkins's B3 ascension in harmony with an ever-powerful Edwards-Noble rhythm section sees the room thicken and swirl to the point of giddiness. There is one unreal part at 22:22 where we're sure you can hear Edwards's bass vocalizing. Regrouped for a second set, Steve Noble's metallic textures meld with detuned arco bass to create an unholy atmosphere, ripe for Hawkins to play out the eerier end of the Hammond. When McPhee sounds a sax motif the band catches it quickly and it's soon wickedly morphed and stretched by each player, recurring to absurdity in a stoned-out funk free for all. The whole recording bleeds enthusiasm and joyful imagination and is a brilliant document of an unforgettable evening. For over a quarter of a century, sound artist and composer Richard Chartier has interrogated an ever deepening thread of minimalist sound that meshes questions of stasis, pulse and timbre. The results of this work is some of the most quietly intense compositions of this century. His is a music of subtle variation, unwavering concentration, and also patience. This five part work created between 2020 and 2022 is dedicated to his friend and fellow sound artist Steve Roden.
"I first became friends with Steve Roden (and later his wife, Sari) back in 1998 when my first album 'direct.incidental.consequential' was released. He was one of the first group of artists to whom I sent the album. Almost instantly he had been there on the other side of the phone (or email) and ever since.
His way of listening and attention to details (no matter how small) was inspirational — the clarity and complexity of his understated and only seemingly simple compositions, engaging. Underneath it all, 'the less’ truly opened your ears to 'the more.' Steve saw and heard everything between the noise, no matter how faint.
Some of the last times I was able to see Steve were right before the pandemic. The effects of his advancing Alzheimers were present, still somewhat subtle, but increasing. I am still regretful that we were unable to spend more time together prior to his succumbing to his condition’s cruel effects. Another regret is not engaging in the collaboration we had both talked about for YEARS. 'We should really start on that sometime soon' Steve and I would say with each passing year.
I worked on the compositions included on this album as Steve gradually slipped away from communication. He was not in my life like he had been before. During this time it became apparent that these pieces were for Steve. A reflection of his ability to find beauty in the most minute details. Even when finally reviewing the final masters after his passing, I tried to think about how Steve would listen.
What would Steve hear in the details? His effect on this album is strong... the accumulation of influence and inspiration. This album feels organic and warm and was developed during a time when his absence in my life increased. That warmth is reflective of the nature of who Steve was himself, his friendship, and his visual & sound work.

This is a unique trio, fusing tastes of ambient and drone with spices of neo-folk and jazz into Dead Jazz. A true witch's stew where everything is of the moment. Recorded live and direct from the Ghost Time.
The lineup is unusual too. English pocket trumpeter Andy Knight is flanked by two drummer/percussionists, Z'EV from the USA and Ken Hyder from Scotland.
As a group they allude to traces of greatly diverse influences and traditions. Bass lines are drawn from the Ceol Mor - the ancient tradition of Scottish Pibroch…the music of laments. Ken's vocals use elements of Canntaireachd, a vocalisation of bagpipe playing, as well as Khoomei, a Siberian form of overtone singing he learned in Tuva. Z'EV uses alto and baritone rolmos - Tibetan ritual cymbals which generate a rich range of overtones - and Ken uses tenor rolmos.
As you listen, you might get a feeling of something you felt before… A hint of music you might have caught on the wind, off the water, in your sleep, or in someone's eyes. Every faint glimpse lingers awhile before it slips away.
From 2019 to 2022, Gorgun drafted the record twice, then deleted most of her sketches. By the time she opened a new session, she had gone through an accidental electrocution, a cancer diagnosis, and an allergic collapse that nearly suffocated her. During treatment, chemotherapy left her in a cognitive fog known as “chemo-brain,” forcing her to relearn the craft of composition from scratch.
While rebuilding her own focus, she watched her friends, relatives, and musical heroes battle illness, recover, or slip away. The result is ‘Earthbound’: a final, third iteration recorded in the quiet intervals between sunshine afternoons in the park, surgeries, funerals, long walks by the sea, emergency rooms, and snow-lit nights — above all, between days spent searching for sound and music. Yet, rather than foregrounding those ordeals, Gorgun surrendered to them, composing as a witness to the post-COVID world limping back to life in 'Janus'; to the wavedrops rejoining the sea in 'Cloudbreak Swell'; to a joyful stargazing experience in Moonbeams, to the attention-seeking power-drunk swagger in 'Edgelord'; to memory dissolving at the doorway — the doorway effect — in 'Olvido'; or to the way Middle-Eastern artists are ever more exotically consumed while their homelands splinter in 'Exocannibalism' and 'Bon Pour L’Orient'.

“During treatment, I lost the very inner critic I used to rely on — and secretly longed to silence. So, this is probably some of my unconscious accumulation of musical memories coming to the surface. It would be oh-so-convenient to call this a 'survival album,' but it is not that, since there is no one to fight, nothing to win. I have only undergone some profound experiences and thankfully, returned with music. The rest is ineffable.
Each track carries its own story. Cleared is the longstanding project of Steven Hess and Michael Vallera, based in Chicago, Illinois. The six tracks complete the longest release to date by the duo, who were resolute in utilizing the maximum time available on the compact disc format. Cleared has produced a series of critically recognized recordings since its self-titled debut in 2011. Working with the Touch label on The Key (recorded in spring 2019, released in October 2020) was a leap forward, prompting remixed tracks by Philp Jeck, Fennesz, Bethan Kellough, and Olivia Block.
Of Endless Light is noctambulant, a walk through formal sonic spaces and colors beginning with the cascading, bell-like tones of the opening track, "First Sleep." The husks of a city's industrial past are summoned: warehouses hollowed out for condominiums, dust-covered factory floors, a distant grind of machining, clouds of metallic particles, and the persistent background hum of traffic. These remnants contrast with hints of the sterile present of a city no less cruel than its industrial past. "Dawn" opens with a grey drone and scattered electronic rhythms as wiring, and extended guitar lines suggest the opening of another cycle of the day into evening. "Pulse" offers a hypnotic pattern that suggests the movement of people through the city's core, slowly overlain with cymbals evoking the shimmer of sunlight cleaving off the windows of distant buildings. The album appropriately concludes with "Walking Field," methodically moving forward via a cloud of meditative clicks and looping melodies.
Of Endless Light is a patient listen, distilled into a sonic environment specific to Hess and Vallera's lens. Cleared created its crepuscular moods using the core methodology of their previous records while expanding their music's range, artistry, and subtlety. Deploying careful instrumentation, sampling, and mixing to experiment with tone and atmosphere, Of Endless Light breathes and drifts through layers of sound that veil, reveal, and intrigue. The result gives a listener much to discover, examine, experience, and consider - as well as the incentive to return again and again. Ash International presents Mirror Views, a new long-form work from LA-based composer Byron Westbrook. While Westbrook’s field recording process has been central for many years to both his composition and installation works, there has yet to be a major release showcasing this aspect of his artistic practice. On Mirror Views, he seamlessly blends cassette field recordings with “faked” synthesizer binaural environments created from noise and unstable tones. The album's four sections and 72 minutes unfold with patience, taking cues from Luc Ferarri and Maryanne Amacher to use the passage of time to create deeply immersive effects. Westbrook also incorporates animated phase relationships between speakers to simulate perspective shifts, blurring what is a documented event vs. electronic fabrication. This is a work of subtlety and sonic precision that is only possible to reproduce on CD and digital formats.

Mirror Views is composed from audio elements of Threshold Variations, a multi-channel audio and light installation presented in 2017 while Westbrook was artist-in-residence with ISSUE Project Room in Brooklyn. The audience visiting the installation was invited to navigate a dark room with mirrored walls while a sequence of colored low lighting filled the space, gradually shifting hue and amplitude as the sound played at low volume, co-existing with exterior sound. The installation’s focus was dynamic play with perception of presence, both real and imagined.
The sounds heard here are a mix of cassette field recordings made on or around the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse, intermingling with synthesized environments created with the Buchla 200 Synthesizer at EMS Stockholm while in residence in late 2016. During his stay in Stockholm, Westbrook resided in a notoriously haunted boarding house where many claim to have seen a ghost in the mirrors in the top floor apartment. While he never witnessed the ghost, he was constantly looking. Stefan Goldmann’s ‘Call and Response’ has been crafted entirely from artificial reverb and nothing else: historic and contemporary units, responding only to brief electronic impulses (clicks).
All sounds stem exclusively from the intrinsic properties of machines designed to replicate spatial acoustics. These range from early mechanical means such as springs and plates to increasingly complex algorithms aimed at convincingly approximating the rich acoustic responses of real world environments.
The devices’ idiosyncrasies enable the creation of spaces that fall short of naturalistic expectations. Yet new possibilities of exploring physically impossible alternative realities emerge. Recorded music has a rich history of much beloved and highly unreal spatial designs – from the slap-back sounds of rock’n’roll and the echoes of dub to gated snare reverbs and the nonlinear reflection bursts of 1980’s drum machine fame. Despite the expected obsolescence of most historic efforts in the age of convolution reverb technology, many odd spatialisation techniques persist and are now the subject of contemporary emulation.
In ‘Call and Response’, the capacity of artificial reverb to go far beyond what the reflections of physical surfaces can elicit is often amplified to gargantuan proportions, only to be folded back into what appears to be the most minuscule of entrapments. Hissing tunnels and threatening wells vibrate left and right. A succession of ‘frozen’ reverbs solidifies what otherwise would be fleeting reflections. Rapid shifts create artifacts that tear the fabric of space, only to reveal the underlying mechanics of its simulation. Occasional feedback, a reverb’s output looped back into a unit’s input, produces eerie harmonic textures inherent in algorithmic response curves (analogous to resonance frequencies determined by a room’s geometric shape).
The continuously dynamic handling of parameters such as size, density and shape allows for the exploration of impossible architecture along impossible trajectories. Wald (forest) is the centerpiece of the three works that make
up Schwingende Luftsäulen 2.
It is the forest with its multiple meanings, real and symbolic,
mythological, religious, literary, folkloric. The forest as a
place that is sacred or magical, dreamlike or fairy-tale.
A place of adventure and misadventure, to trek through with
a view toward growth or rebirth.

In Spiegel (Mirror), dedicated to the Tonaliens Ensemble, the
Pan-Ney and the tenor saxophone weave a layered dialogue in
which they call and respond to each other. Not only. In their
‘mirroring conversation' the two instruments seem to suggest
a choreography. Durand's music stands out for its ability to
make some 'scenes' visible. In the dance evoked in Spiegel,
the gestures - and perhaps even the bodies - appear
suspended and rarefied, just as the music is suspended and
rarefied, while, during listening, time expands beyond the
duration of the piece. Music and dance remain there, in
midair, even at the end of the ritual.

Panga, for Pan-Ney, tenor sax and digital delay, contains an
allusion to nature. Panga (note the morpheme “pan”, which
refers to Durand’s instrument) is the name of a plant that
grows in New Zealand but that occurs in the botany of other
areas of the planet (for example, in the Amazon) in
connection with ancient practices both pharmacological and
aphrodisiac. But the plant could easily belong to a manual of
imaginary botany, if one thinks that nature, for Durand, is
both a source of real inspiration and a place to reinvent
according to subjective visions and coordinates."

Here the third and final chapter of “Schwingende Luftsäulen” the series dedicated by Werner Durand to the Pan-Ney, the wind instrument of his own invention. In confront with the first two volumes this one represent a sort of flashback. In fact the five pieces on the CD present “early” works, mainly created in the first half of the 90s.
“Still Another Ocean” was composed in June /July1991 in Ile de la Réunion, in the wonderful house of Frédéric Borne. “M-Ocean” was composed in the summer of 1994 in the summer house of Marika Falk in Bavaria. “Pearldivers” was also created in the same time and place, together with Marika Falk on talking drum. This is a re-mixed, unedited version of the piece, originally released on the CD “Drumming Breath” “The Krems Five” is based on the piece “Dream Hunters” from 1990, and was created during a residency in Krems, Austria in September/October 2011. A “Another Still Ocean” is an extension of “Still Another Ocean”. Created in the mid-nineties, it is the only one of my Pan-Ney pieces in which I use a pre-recorded loop, which is also sent through delays of 7 1/2 beats.

“Spillá” (meaning "to play" in the secret language of the Neapolitan musicians) is a meeting between two masters of the guitar: Elliott Sharp's continuous innovation meet Sergio Sorrentino’s mastery of interpretation.
Recorded live in 2018 in Vercelli (Italy) here we have the surprising and effervescent rendition of two Sharp’s graphic scores: "Hudson River Nr. 6" (1974) is an early experiment and is part of a series of scores derived from topographical maps superimposed to musical staff and then manipulated by the author.
"Liquidity" is part of a latter approach (2011) working on fragments of pre-existent musical notations heavily manipulated at the computer by Sharp.
Both the scores deals with visual art as well as contemporary music, and are conceived to give to the performers (better, interpreters), the broader informations to "walk-in" the scores (following conceptual images and/or "sonorous" instructions).
The rest of the disc is comprised of two long improvisations where Sharp and Sorrentino takes the occasion to use the most varied (and "extended") guitar techniques, spanning all the range of contemporary "guitarism".
All the pieces are World Premiere Recordings.

mex is a non-profit-organization for intermedia and experimental music projects, located in Dortmund, Germany. Since 1992 more than 650 musicians and media artists from around the world presented their subtle, noisy, improvised or conceptual works. mex’s traditional venue for those projects of concerts in combination with performance, video and intermedia, is the mexKeller at the Künstlerhaus with it’s special acoustic and atmosphere. Jens Brand began inviting artists and later Maija Julius went on until Achim Zepezauer took over in 2015. mex is a member of Medienwerk NRW. Kindly supported by: Department of cultural affairs of the City of Dortmund, Pro Jazz e.V. and Künstlerhaus Dortmund.
The artists featured on this sampler were guests within the curation of Achim Zepezauer and performed live for the mex audience between 2013 & 2019. A late and welcome arrival from the Matchless vaults. Phlegm captures AMM in their classic trio configuration, Eddie Prévost on percussion, Keith Rowe on tabletop electronics, John Tilbury on piano, recorded live at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, November 2015. One continuous hour-long piece, a setting closely aligned with the group's longstanding commitment to electroacoustic improvisation and one of the final documented performances of the trio.
By this stage AMM's language had been distilled into a near-silent, highly attentive practice in which conventional instrumental identities dissolve into a shared sonic field. Prévost articulates space and texture as much as rhythmic gesture, Rowe introduces fragile discontinuities and low-level interference, and Tilbury, often reduced to isolated tones, internal resonances and measured decay, anchors the ensemble through restraint rather than assertion. The music does not develop in linear fashion: it advances as a continuous act of listening, where events emerge, dissipate and reconfigure with extreme sensitivity to duration and presence, and silence functions as active material shaping the form of the piece.
The album takes its title from an extended coughing episode in the audience, initially impossible to ignore, eventually absorbed into the continuum of sound and listening, true to AMM's egalitarian approach to sonic phenomena and to a discipline in which the smallest inflection assumes structural significance. AMM disbanded in 2022; Phlegm stands as a distilled document of the trio's mature aesthetic, patient, immersive and unwavering in its commitment to collective attention and the primacy of listening. From the outset this ad hoc quartet hit the gas, launching into a frenzied, high-octane set with alto saxophonist Rasmussen engaging in a furious tightrope-walk of upper register screams while O’Rourke unspools some of the most gnarly guitar noise this side of Masayuki Takayanagi. Of course, with such flinty, seasoned improvisers there are thrilling peaks-and-valleys, such as the extended hydroplaning guitar O’Rourke sculpts mid-way through the first extended piece, with the rest of the group taking a much-deserved pause. The pause sets the stage of a thrilling recalibration, with Corsano first diving in with an epic improvisation only to recede for one of Sakata’s singular vocal improvisations, a throaty incantation as dynamic and visceral as his alto playing. Rasmussen returns, with Sakata picking up his clarinet, and suddenly the twinned reed blast that started the whole performance toggles into more spacious interplay, tapping into jazz orthodoxy without being held captive by it.
The entire recording is a testament to refined listening. Even at the most scorching peaks each player is deftly attuned to one another’s sonic projections. Most of the music I make nowadays is commissioned for film, dance, or other projects. And I love it — it’s the best job in the world! — but sometimes I have to pull myself away from it, and make something purely for myself. My 2004 release “Omval” was one of these works, as is now “Spelonk”. These projects are always made in short bursts; once I start creating, things fall into place quickly, as if the ideas were (unknowingly) already there and just needed to get out of my system.
The three tracks that comprise “Spelonk” (simply titled I, II, III) are build with “hardware jams” that I recorded with my live setup. It’s all quite hands-on, with effects pedals, an oscillator, and electronic gadgets. The magic happens when combining different recordings, layering them, and hearing what happens. Listening is always a favorite moment in the process, with a welcome element of surprise. I guess it’s all about creating alien landscapes — alien also to me too — that are exciting to explore.
I hesitate to say much more about these tracks as colouring the listener’s experience would be an unwelcome distraction. Eyes closed… enjoy the ride.

Asmus Tietchens is a sound artist and composer from Hamburg, Germany. He got interested in Musique Concrete by listening to a German radio programme when he was 10 years old. In 1965, at the age of 18, Asmus started experimenting with tape loops and turned them into musical collages. Soon, the use of synthesizers was added. In 1980 his debut album Nachtstücke was released, produced by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream. This was soon followed by a series of albums of electronic pop music for the Sky label, home of many Krautrock bands. Tietchens often uses special source materials for his compositions such as water (Seuchengebiete), human voices (Von Mund zu Mund), paper (Papier ist geduldig). He is associated with the Industrial music scene through his collaborations and releases on labels such as United Dairies, Esplendor Geometrico or Dom Records. Tietchens never studied composition, he has no academic background, everything he does is self taught or learnign by doing. Nevertheless, he was professor for sound design in Hamburg in recent years. Alice Freshmouth is an anagram project by Tom Fleischhauer. Tom plays guitar and bass and has worked as producer, live sound engineer, booker, promoter and composer. Him and Asmus have been friends for over 40 years, they regularly meet in Hamburg, either as musicians or attending concerts. When Tom played Asmus his most recent musical compositions, the two decided that their work was not completely compatible, but shows enough similar approach to start a spontaneous collaboration. Soon afterwards first ideas were exchanged and half a year later an album was born. Sorgente is the first solo album by the Italian Maestro Devid Ciampalini.
Recorded in a period of isolation spent in Garfagnana, a geographical and historical area in Tuscany, between the Apuan Alps and the main chain of the Tuscan Emilian Apennines, Sorgente reflects the nature of his genesis and the shapeless character of the watercourses which inspired it.
On the footsteps of itineraries traveled in youth, Devid opens a dialogue between the natural elements of these unspoiled landscapes and the analog equipment used for processing and revealing what captured during the recordings sessions.
The electronic bleep blops of these strange and lively compositions have something that recalls the blossoming mushrooms, the vivid green of the moss that springs up on the stones, the smells of the undergrowth, the movements of all the micro fauna that lives in the so called Alta Valle del Serchio and something of the gentle and bizarre character of Devid himself.
As the well-known Italian metaphonist Marcello Bacci, also from Tuscany, Devid seems to research something of secret and hidden into the sounds he’s playing with. Surrounded by tape recorders, old synthesizers, sonorous objects and strange self-made stuff, Devid moves like a medium in the middle of his experience, filtering and mixing, and then redistributing sound bubbles in the attempt of blending natural phenomena and electronica into new elements, sometimes more abstract, sometimes more concrete.
Recording devices provide a chance of spirit communication and try to connect us to this different plane of reality. The sound, after switching to a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and after being randomly cut and pasted, reveals itself completely at about ear level as an ecologically shimmering sound system.

Devid Ciampalini is a musician and composer, founder of the Ambient-Noise Session collective. It carries out research linked to improvisation and composition of electronic music, using synthesizers, field recordings and magnetic tapes. His work is on the border between cosmic music and concrete music. Specifically, his technique consists of recording multitrack on magnetic tape, synthesizer improvisation and field recordings, then cut the reel in small portions, mix them together and randomly get them back together to achieve a stereo sound collage. Once ready this reel is used as a random sequence to be modified on the spot and to interact with.
With Ambient-Noise Session since 2011 he organizes events in theaters, social centers, woods, etc. carrying on its own idea of language made of psychedelia, noise and free music.

Giovanni Di Domenico率いるアンサンブルの音源!!ジム・オルークを含む様々な音楽家との共演、またソロではDie Schachtel等に音源を残し、そして2020年の個人的ベストリリース[ISASOLO!]が当店にてかなりの人気を博したイタリア人ピアニスト/コンポーザーGiovanni Di Domenico。自身の繊細なオーケストレーション及び室内楽の表現の為に結成したユニットNew Mo(ve)ments Ensembleの1stアルバムを遂に出版。金管楽器、アコーディオン、ピアノのハーモニーによる相互作用が美しく、それらは全ての氏の感性に結び付けられているとの事。Canti Magneticiからリリースというのも興味深い。
In 2010 Giovanni Di Domenico formed a band called “Mo(ve)ments Ensemble” and released a CD on Belgian independent label Spocus The concept and repertoire of that band reflected Di Domenico’s love for subtle orchestration and chamber music sensibilities, the basic idea behind it being the dissertation of the organic elements that form the instruments involved (in that case the wood of the strings and clarinet) and the re-construction of them by means of musical ideas (again: the orchestration, the particular ‘colour’ of those instruments).
After more then 10 years Di Domenico is forming a New Mo(ve)ments Ensemble: the line-up changed as the focus now will not be on organic elements (not only strings: the line-up this time mixes much more those elements, with brass, aerophone and percussion instruments added) but rather on the melodic/harmonic interaction between those instruments and on the timbral characteristics of each of those instruments, all tied together by Di Domenico’s arrangements and sensibilities.
