Three pianos. Independent paths. Changing constellations of sound.
Atmospheres — The New York School for Three Pianos brings together music by John Cage, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, and Christian Wolff, four composers whose work in the 1950s radically reconsidered the relationships between composer, score, performer, sound, and time.
Composed between 1953 and 1969, the five works on this recording—Cage’s Winter Music, Brown’s Twenty-Five Pages and Corroboree, Wolff’s Tilbury 1, and Feldman’s Two Pieces for Three Pianos—present strikingly different approaches to openness, indeterminacy, and performer choice.
Realized here for three pianos, the music unfolds through independent paths, changing relationships, and contrasting approaches to musical time. Pages may be reordered or inverted, events may proceed without synchronization, and performers may determine aspects of pitch, timing, register, and instrumental color. Yet this is not music without structure: each composer establishes a distinct framework within which a performance can take shape. Atmospheres explores the space between composition and realization, where sound, silence, resonance, and the performer's decisions become part of the form itself.
