Voices of Memory is a stereo adaptation of Christina Kubisch's Voices of Memory installation across two CDs.
For this stereo adaptation Kubisch made a selection from the list of 42,000 dead and engaged new voices. Incantatory and variably accented, the reading switches frequently between channels. Overlaps occur and occasionally clusters form around a single name shared by multiple victims of the conflict. Unrepeatable moments of being recede, as you listen, a little further into the past despite the iterable immediacy of that human speech lingering in digital traces. As philosopher Paul Ricoeur pertinently observed, "Beneath history, memory and forgetting. Beneath memory and forgetting, life." Wire magazine
The Goethe-Institut Irland, Dublin City Council and Farpoint Recordings are delighted to present Voices of Memory, a double CD sound work created by the internationally renowned sound artist Christina Kubisch. These CDs are a new iteration of the sound installation which has been located along the banks of the River Liffey in the Irish National Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin since June 2016. The inspiration for the work was the location of the Gardens and Ireland’s Memorial Records 1914-1918 listing the over 49,000 people from Irish regiments who died in the First World War.
"The wind erodes parts of the composition and carries them elsewhere. The remembering resumes. A blur of names. It is now a female voice. I am struck by the cadence and tonality of each acousmatic sound, their circadian rhythms oblivious to time and space, imbued with a humanity far removed from the rates of fire of the front-line trenches. Snatches of external conversations drift in. I leave one sound field for another. November marks the close of an already ephemeral memorial."
