Keith Rowe and John Tilbury are both known as prominent members of AMM, the legendary ensemble which has been incredibly influential on the field of improvised music.
Originating the tabletop guitar, Keith Rowe was a co-founder of AMM in 1965. He's since been involved in a wide range of projects with Mimeo, Toshimaru Nakamura, Radu Malfatti to name but a few.
John Tilbury is known as a famous contemporary classical pianist, having released many recordings of Howard Skempton, Christian Wolff, John Cage, and is considered one of the foremost interpreters of Morton Feldman. Tilbury and Rowe first met each other in 1965, when both were asked by Cornelius Cardew to perform Treatise for a BBC broadcast. They have known a successful professional relationship ever since playing in various groups such as the Scratch Orchestra, performing Wolff and Cage pieces, and most notably, in AMM since about 1980 when Tilbury joined the group.
In 2004, Rowe left AMM when tension between percussionist Eddie Prévost and him was exacerbated by some harsh criticisms about Rowe’s playing in Prévost's second book of essays, Minute Particulars.
E.E. Tension and Circumstance exemplifies the very first meeting between Rowe and Tilbury since this split and is the second time they record as a duo. Their first release, Duos for Doris (Erstwhile) recorded in January 2003, at Vandœuvre CCAM studio (France), was dedicated to John’s mother.
The front cover drawing of E.E. Tension and Circumstance CD was made by Milford Rowe, Keith’s brother. Liner notes were written by Keith himself, imitating his mother’s handwriting, Eileen Elizabeth Rowe.
