個人的にも大好きな音楽家として紹介してきた、現在はサンフランシスコに拠点を置く異色のコンポーザーDanny Clayの2018年作品。子供の頃に教会で聞いた楽曲の記憶をもとに、フルート、チェロ、ピアノによるスコアを作り出した彼らしいコンセプチュアルなアコースティック録音。プレイヤーそれぞれの演奏は深夜の教会で個別に行われたもので、それら素材をDanny Clayが4パート編成で再構築。静寂な夜の情景がゆったりと揺蕩うクラシカルなアンビエント。

Periphery consists of 4 realizations of the same score, performed with flute, cello, piano and tones. It takes a simple tune Clay heard at his grandparents’ church as a child and unravels it, leaving the remnants to drift among each other and the original to loom as a kind of vague feeling at the edge of the senses. In other words: a perfect companion to fall asleep with.

The album was recorded over the course of a few months in 2015, late at night at a small church in a quiet neighbourhood of San Francisco. Although technically a series of instrumental trios (flute, cello and piano), the 3 musicians played in the space on different nights, making each of the recorded versions in itself a composite of three different performances.
