In January 2024 Marcus Fischer invited musicians to perform interpretations of graphic musical scores. For David Chandler and Paul Dickow this highlighted an essential challenge of graphic scores: without a top down schema given by the composer, what is the basis for the performer’s interpretation? Can a musician realize the graphic score musically with little to no imposition of subjectivity? Armed with tracing paper, chalk, piezo styluses, EEG brainwave readers, and a modular synthesizer from the 1970s, Chandler and Dickow translate Fischer’s score in radically unconventional ways.
