Working Waterfronts

These recordings were made over a 2 year period in Portland, Maine and Lisbon, Portugal.

They are part of an ongoing series investigating the acoustic ecology of working waterfronts, the impact of shipping on ocean eco systems and the dynamic diversity of maritime soundscapes.

Ocean Gateway

Portland, Maine

An international ferry terminal, cruise ship dock, and city park, Ocean Gateway is an interesting place to listen to the city, especially on an incoming tide.. To capture a comprehensive sonic image, these recordings utilize simultaneous microphone arrays: a stereo pair of hydrophones and two pairs of omni microphones positioned across different sections of the terminal. Originally presented as a live quadraphonic performance, this version has been rendered to stereo for this release.

Doca da Marinha

Lisbon, Portugal

Recorded on the Tagus River at a public dock as the day begins. This piece utilizes simultaneous arrays – a contact microphone, a hydrophone, and a matched set of omni microphones—to capture this one small part of the city as the morning develops.

Dredging Barge on a Rising Tide

Casco Bay, Portland, Maine

In winter 2025 there was a large-scale dredging operation in Casco Bay. The barge remained active for several weeks, providing an opportunity for extensive documentation of its activities. This recording, made with a matched pair of omni-directional microphones, is my favorite of the barge

The New Town Dock

Portland, Maine

The new town dock. A large aluminum dock on the harbor located near the ocean gateway. It is a fabulously noisy thing and a great place to work with all sorts of microphones. This particular recording is made with 2 contact microphones.

Recorded with Sound Devices MIxpre 6 II and Sony D100 using Lom microphones, JRF contact mics and hydrophones, Aquarian hydrophones

E. Jason Gibbs is an internationally recognized field recordist, composer, and sound artist whose work has been published throughout the U.S., Britain, and the EU. he is a founding member of Open Systems Studios in Portland, Maine.

Active in experimental music performance and recording since the late 1980s, over the past 10 years his practice has shifted from improvised music to field recording and soundscape composition. Central to the work is the theme of walking and listening as a way of understanding the world. Through travel and exploration, he records the ways humans inhabit and reshape diverse environments.

Recent work focuses on the acoustic ecology of working waterfronts and the impact of shipping on ocean ecosystems. Using condenser, contact microphones, and hydrophones, Gibbs captures the dynamic diversity of maritime soundscapes: the shifting tides and creaking docks of Portland and Lisbon, and the industrial clamor and churn of the Mississippi river in New Orleans. these recordings examine the acoustic footprint of global commerce—the pressure it exerts on waterways and communities, the histories of these places, and the traditional livelihoods of their residents.
