Label: Tribe Tapes
Among the better surprises of the past few years has been the re-emergence of veteran home taper TAC / Tom Cox. Once beloved by savvy listeners for his unorthodox studies of sound objects, cut-up tape music and microphone treatments, he had previously been absent from experimental circles for a lengthy period of over two decades. Yet in the past few years we have been grateful to receive new material from Tom by the likes of Ballast, Satatuhatta, and BISAD.
This new CD (and his first since 1997’s “Out Of Context” via Pure) collects unreleased assemblages and field recordings spanning a particularly fertile era of work from 1990 to 1996. But going back to older material has never been something foreign to Tom’s craft, even before the project’s revival he has continually repurposed archival source tapes as part of new compositions. As such, a well-acquainted ear will be able to make out certain motifs familiar from past releases.
The end result is not at all a mere compilation of outtakes or scrapped material but rather a triumphant return to form. Tribe Tapes is honored to present his latest opus, intricately adorned with a design reflecting the passion he’d picked up in his noted absence — the research of mycology, in turn using fungal spores as a method for visual art.
