In 1989, Ross Bolleter devised the Synchronicity Project: where musicians improvised simultaneously across Australia – and indeed the world – without hearing each other. These pieces cast a net for synchronicities. The project also produced a series of radiophonic works. The second of these, That Time/Simulplay 2 – an intuitive piece for two musicians on opposite sides of a continent, playing at precisely the same time but unable to hear each other, while the radio audience heard them both– involved Ryszard Ratajczak playing double bass in Studio 210 of abc fm, Sydney, with Bolleter playing two pianos – one of them prepared – in abc's Studio 621, Perth. That Time/Simulplay 2 was released on Bolleter’s album Crow Country (Pogus 21021-02, New York) in 2000. Bolleter and Rowan Hammond wrote an article on That Time/Simulplay 2: “Improvising with synchronistic experiences” in NMA 9, Melbourne, 1991:

In 2021, Ross Bolleter invited Sylvain Roux for an improvisation at precisely the same time – Sylvain at 9.00 am in Razac de Saussignac, approximately 80 kms inland from Bordeaux, in the Périgord region of France, and me at 4.00 pm in Bayswater, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia—more than 14,000 kms away.
They improvised for 30 minutes. Neither of them could hear the other. There were no prior specifications as to instrumentation, genre, or style and approach.

Compound Fracture is a collaboration between composers and improvisers Antoinette Carrier and Ross Bolleter, who live on opposite sides of “the compound” – about 3.3 kms apart – in Bedford and Bayswater, suburbs of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The railway line from Perth to Midland runs through the middle of “the compound.” Again, they couldn’t hear each other, and now the listener can hear thel both. These pieces cast a net for synchronistic experiences in March 2021.

Dark Shine is a synchronous improvisation between Eduardo Cossio & Ross Bolleter. It took place on January the 24th, 2023, from 9.00 pm to 10.00 pm. Eduardo Cossio performed and recorded in Inglewood; Ross Bolleter in Bayswater. Inglewood and Bayswater are suburbs of Perth, Western Australia.
