大友良英氏を中心に結成された即興ユニット"FEN"の2025年音源!!

FEN (Far East Network) は、日本東京在住の大友良英、韓国ソウル在住の Ryu Hankil、シンガポール在住の Yuen Chee Wai、中国北京在住の Yan Jun の4人から成る即興音楽グループ。2008年の結成以来現在に至るまで、4人は断続的に顔を揃えては世界各国で演奏をおこなってきた。

FENは、2018年に韓国光州で開催された国際現代美術展「光州ビエンナーレ2018」で、シンガポールの現代アーティスト Ho Tzu Nyen とのコラボレーション・プロジェクトの一環として、8チャンネル・サウンド・インスタレーションを展示した。そのインスタレーションのために、FENの4人のメンバーはまず、15分間のトラックを (ほかのメンバーの作品を前もって聴いたり、何らかの情報を得たりせずに) 各自4点 (合計16点) 制作することを決めた。なお大友は予め決めたルールを失念し、15分のトラックを1点しか制作してこなかったので、Yan Jun がそれを聞くことなく4つにカットし、そこに無音部分を多く盛り込んだ各15分の4トラックに作り直した。それから、各メンバーのトラックひとつずつを無作為に混ぜ合わせ、その後も一切の編集をおこなわずに4つのトラックを完成させた。本CDには、この最終トラック、各15分の4曲を収録している。各メンバーの使用楽器は、大友良英 (ギター)、Ryu Hankil (max/msp)、Yuen Chee Wai (ギター、エレクトロニクス)、Yan Jun (フィールド・レコーディング)。





FEN (Far East Network) is an improvised music ensemble made up of Otomo Yoshihide, who lives in Tokyo; Seoul-based Ryu Hankil; Yuen Chee Wai, who lives in Singapore; and Beijing-based Yan Jun. Since FEN's formation in 2008, the four members have gathered and performed in various countries on an intermittent basis.

In 2018 FEN exhibited an eight-channel sound installation at the Gwangju Biennale 2018—an international contemporary art exhibition held in Gwangju, Korea—as part of the group's collaborative project with Singaporean contemporary artist Ho Tzu Nyen. For the installation, the four members of FEN decided to start by providing four 15-minute tracks each (without listening to or obtaining any information about the other members' works in advance), for a total of 16 tracks. But Otomo Yoshihide forgot the preset rule and created and sent only one 15-minute track, so Yan Jun cut this track into four parts and, without listening to it, rearranged it as four 15-minute tracks with many blanks. Next, he randomly mixed each member's track one at a time, then completed the four tracks without further editing. This CD contains the four final 15-minute tracks. As for the instruments, Otomo Yoshihide played guitar, Ryu Hankil used Max/MSP, Yuen Chee Wai played guitar and electronics, and Yan Jun used field recordings.
