このダブルベース・プレイヤー目茶苦茶ヤバいです!!パッケージデザインはLasse Marhaugが担当!!ノルウェー出身のダブルベーシストにして作曲家、クセナキスやベリオをはじめとする現代音楽家の楽曲、また自国の伝統音楽の演奏もしたりする強者プレイヤーHakon Thelin。自主レーベルPeninsula Audio Recordsより2025年9月に出版、地元在住の作曲家達4名が彼の為に書いた全6種の楽曲を演奏し纏め上げたソロ音源[ABYSS]。現代のコントラバスの可能性の深淵を探るというコンセプトのもと教会やホールで録音を実施、地響きの様にうねる低音域から、もはや物体音と化したソリッドな擦弦奏法、恐ろしい程に重厚なプレイが続く超傑作。

"...if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you"

This album delves into the abyss of sounds and possibilities of the contemporary double bass, with deeply personal works by composers Øyvind Mæland, Idin Samimi Mofakham, Edvin Østergaard and Jan Martin Smørdal.

The music is multifaceted and portrays a wide range of expressions: from Mæland’s impressionistic interlude (originally composed as a cello solo in his opera Ad undas – Solaris korrigert), via Mofakham’s massive and disturbing sonic reflection on current socio-political events, and Østergaard’s contemplations and outbursts into the bass’ A-string and its (many) partials, to Smørdal’s short and delicate tableaus where he is searching for a complexity in sounds through the presence of the performer.

For me as a performer, it has been particularly rewarding to see how the composers have embraced modern playing techniques on the double bass (some of them even new-found) as a means of exploring their own expressiveness.

ABYSS is a local initiative at the Nesodden peninsula outside Oslo, where I am performing new music for double bass and commissioning works by composers living here. This is the first release of what will hopefully become a series of releases documenting the works that are being composed for me.

The cover art has been created by photographer Jenny Rydhagen, also an artist living at Nesodden. She has created her impressions of the music using analog photography and double exposure collage techniques.
