Minimal Surface is the full-length debut from the long-running NYC band Thee Reps. As their name suggests, Thee Reps’ method of investigation involves finding good ideas and exploring them over long periods of repetition, sometimes with utter simplicity, other times with intricate, evolving interlocking lines. While relating to compositional motoric minimalism, Krautrock of the 70s, and post-rock of the 90s, Thee Reps offer something of a different flavor - less bombastic, more inscrutable, always flexible, and deeply focused.
The album opens with the Kurt-Weill-meets-Duck-Tales groove of “Big Bebek”, anchored by Jeff Tobias’s bass playing. The slippery triplet melody is voiced by Karen Waltuch on viola and Dave Ruder on guitar, and Sam Morrison’s stabbing solo on synth stretches things out. Up next is the intertwined lines of “Head for Sand”, a sectional piece that places and replaces players in their own different time signatures, achieving a mobile-like effect.
Other tracks include the slow and subtle shifting of color of “Qumran”, built on the spine of a rising 10-note phrase built by guitar, bass, and synth, and with periodic sighs from the viola. “Punisher” has the persuasive insistence of someone who won’t stop talking your ear off, and contains subtly tricky drum work from Max Jaffe. Closing track “Nature Rides Again” is a blazing cadenza for Waltuch on viola over a tricky looping phrase in the synth and guitar.
Tobias, Ruder, and Morrison all contributed multiple compositions to the album, each bringing their own aesthetics of repetition and orchestration to the table. Tobias is a member of psych-punk outfit Sunwatchers, Ruder is a specialist in the work of Robert Ashley and a member of Varispeed and thingNY, and Morrison is a veteran improviser on piano and keyboards. Thee Reps built their particular sound and compositional style starting in 2014 and past line ups have included players known for their work with 75 Dollar Bill, Tony Conrad, American Football, ellen o, JOBS, and many more. Thee Reps’ current performing line up also includes versatile violinist Andie Springer.
