Label: Yerevan Tapes
Virtual Forest returns with its third release on Yerevan Tapes.
After his debut tape Unconscious Cognition is the Processing of Perception and two years since Ritual Machine Music, his first and only vinyl LP, Marco Bernacchia’s mystic solo project offers two more long jams you’ve come to know but from a different angle.
Where previous recordings were openly ethno-oriented, sampling actual sounds and chants from the world tribes, Telling the Bones is one more abstract piece of work.
Heavily relying on droning echoes, field noise, tape hiss and gaunt sonic manipulation, these two new tracks are the nearest point to musique concrète Marco Bernacchia has ever reached.
World music flavour is still here but the structure is so blurry and thin it only leaves a hint of the rituals championed.
You don’t get what you get here by direct exposure, rather by subtraction: you’ll have to dive into the shadows on the Earth’s knowledge and not look for the sun.
What you’ll return to the surface with is Virtual Forest best record so far.
